Achieving the perfect Diwali glow with oily and acne-prone skin can be a real challenge. Diwali is a time of celebration filled with sweets, savory treats, late-night parties, and firecrackers, all of which
can throw your skincare routine completely off balance.
It’s not always possible to indulge in festive foods and still maintain clear, glowing skin. To avoid breakouts and dullness, it’s essential to make mindful choices keeping sugar intake in check, staying hydrated, and balancing the indulgence with healthy habits.
Dr. Soma Sarkar, MBBS, MD (Dermatology), Co-Founder of SkinBB, and Lead Dermatologist, shares her expert tips to help you maintain that festive glow without the grease.
Mind Your Diet and Lifestyle During Festivities
“During Diwali parties, care should be taken to keep glucose spikes in check,” says Dr Sarkar. “Consuming proteins, good carbohydrates, and healthy fats helps maintain nutritional balance even on cheat days.”
She emphasizes that lifestyle habits are just as important as skincare products. “Getting adequate sleep, drinking plenty of water, and exercising regularly are key to achieving healthy, glowing skin,” she advises.
Also, avoid starting any harsh treatments right before or during the celebrations. “Do not indulge in treatments that may irritate the skin during festive days,” Dr. Sarkar warns.
Stick to a Gentle Routine
If your dermatologist has prescribed active skincare products, continue using them but avoid experimenting with new products around Diwali. “During Diwali, simple skin procedures can be undertaken,” says Dr Sarkar, “but if any actives have already been prescribed, keep using them consistently and don’t alter your routine.”
Hydration and cleansing remain crucial, especially with heavy festive makeup. “Make sure to thoroughly remove all makeup including mascara, eyeliner, and glittery eyeshadows before going to bed,” she adds.
Protect and Soothe the Skin
Wearing festive attire, especially glittery silks and embellished fabrics, can sometimes irritate the skin. Proper moisturization during the day can help minimize this irritation. “Applying sunscreen will also help reduce tanning and protect the skin from UV exposure during outdoor celebrations,” notes Dr Sarkar.
A calming nighttime ritual can help your skin recover after a long day of festivities. “Taking a bath with essential oils at the end of the day, even if it’s 2 or 3 a.m., can soothe the skin and aid recovery,” she suggests.
Quick Tips for a Fresh, Oil-Free Glow
Drink lots of water throughout the day.
Spray thermal spring water on your face during parties to refresh your skin without disturbing your makeup.
Stick to your skincare routine, cleanse, tone, hydrate, and protect.
Avoid heavy creams or oils that clog pores.
Visit a dermatologist if any major skin issues arise.
A radiant Diwali glow doesn’t require heavy makeup or harsh treatments, it’s about consistency, balance, and mindful self-care. By following a simple yet effective skincare routine, eating right, and staying hydrated, even those with oily or acne-prone skin can enjoy healthy, glowing skin throughout the festive season.
As Dr Sarkar reminds us, “Doing simple things like staying hydrated, removing makeup properly, and following your regular skincare regimen can keep your skin lovely, healthy, and glowing all through Diwali.”
