Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee led a massive protest in Kolkata against the ruling dispensation over attacks on party leaders, particularly on her
nephew Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur.
Mamata Banerjee led the protest march in Rashmoni Avenue near Esplanade with Abhishek Banerjee, Madan Mitra and Kalyan Banerjee in attendance, despite not receiving permission from the police. Tense drama ensued at the protest site as scuffles broke out between the police and protesters.

Banerjee alleged that the TMC was being targeted unfairly and asserted that the protest would continue till Tuesday evening. She also expressed confidence that the BJP’s fortunes would soon change for the worse.
Before the protest, Mamata and other party leaders, including Dola Sen, offered floral tributes at the statue of Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar. She was also seen holding a book on the Constitution of India before heading for the protest.
What Is The Protest About?
The TMC’s protest is mainly against the targeted attacks on its leaders in post-poll violence-related incidents and other issues. This came amid heightened political tensions following an alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee while visiting a party worker’s house in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas.
On Monday, Banerjee said she will go ahead with the sit-in protest despite not receiving police permission and dared authorities to arrest her. Mamata Banerjee also accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using “money and power” to engineer defections in her party.
The former Chief Minister said that leaders leaving the party for personal interests would help rebuild the organisation, and that the TMC would emerge stronger from the crisis. She also threatened to take the agitation to Delhi if the party was not allowed to protest in Kolkata.
The protest follows an alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur with eggs, bricks and shoes while he was visiting a deceased party worker’s house, for which the TMC blamed the ruling BJP government in West Bengal. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee has also alleged that he survived an “attempt to murder” near Chanditala Police Station while submitting a deputation.
