As many as nine members of India’s squad that won the men’s cricket gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games have reportedly been included in a 30-man probable list for this year’s continental event, scheduled
to be held in September. Among the notable inclusions are 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Shreyas Iyer, while T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav has missed out.
IPL 2026 | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap
According to a report in Amar Ujala, the BCCI has shared the list of probables with the organisers of the 2026 Asian Games, from which a final 15-member squad will be selected. The men’s cricket competition is scheduled to be held from September 24 to October 3.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, who captained India to gold at the previous edition of the Games, has also been included despite not having played a T20I since India’s tour of Zimbabwe in July 2024.
VVS Laxman To Be Named Coach?
The men’s cricket competition at this year’s Asian Games will overlap with India’s three-match ODI series against the West Indies at home, which is scheduled from September 27 to October 3. With India head coach Gautam Gambhir expected to be occupied with the ODI assignments, he will not travel to Japan for the continental event. Batting great VVS Laxman is expected to take charge of the side instead.
Sooryavanshi Lays Claim
In his first full IPL season, Sooryavanshi delivered a record-breaking campaign, amassing 776 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 237.31. He surpassed Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the most sixes in a single IPL edition, set in 2012 when the West Indies legend struck 59 maximums. Sooryavanshi ended the season with an astonishing 72 sixes.
Thanks to a string of performances that have defied his age, calls for an India call-up continue to grow louder. Before the Asian Games, India are also scheduled to tour Ireland for a two-match T20I series, followed by a five-match series in England.
