The dispute started after Trump made remarks about Meloni following the G7 Summit. He claimed the Italian Prime Minister had repeatedly asked for a photograph with him and suggested she was eager to be seen alongside him.
Trump also remarked that Meloni had “begged” for a picture and implied she was pleased to have interacted with him. His comments sparked political debate in Italy and drew criticism from members of Meloni’s government.
Meloni Rejected Trump’s Claims
Meloni firmly denied Trump’s account, describing it as “completely fabricated.”
Responding to the remarks, she said: “neither I nor Italy ever beg.”
The Italian Prime Minister added that her government conducts its foreign policy based on Italy’s national interest and not on personal political considerations. She also indicated that she did not wish to prolong the dispute, saying maintaining cooperation among Western allies remained more important.
