The Mumbai Police has written to the State Government seeking custody of gangster Anmol Bishnoi in connection with the murder of former minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique.
Police have asked the Home Department to check with the Central Government to ease restrictions on moving the gangster out of Tihar Jail.
Anmol Bishnoi, the younger brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, was deported from the United States in November last year and was subsequently arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He was wanted in several sensational cases, including the murder of Baba Siddique and 2024 Salman Khan residence firing case.
The order restricting Anmol’s movement out of the prison was issued weeks after his arrest under Section 303 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Under Section 303, the government can issue the direction that a person or class of persons not be moved out of the prison where they have been kept in detention.
A special NIA court in Delhi had previously rejected the Mumbai Police’s appeal for Anmol Bishnoi’s custody. The Central Government has imposed restrictions on moving Anmol from Tihar Jail until the trial in the NIA case concludes.
Why Mumbai Police Is Seeking Anmol Bishnoi’s Custody?
According to the Mumbai Police, seeking Anmol Bishnoi’s custody is essential to uncover the larger conspiracy behind Baba Siddique’s murder.
A report detailing the investigative agencies’ efforts to secure Anmol’s arrest has been submitted to the special MCOCA court in a sealed envelope.
Baba Siddique’s wife has also demanded that Anmol be arrested and tried alongside the other accused.
The development comes days after the firing on Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff in Mumbai’s Juhu. An alleged overseas operative linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang was named as the main accused in the case.
However, neither Lawrence nor Anmol was named as accused in the case.
Baba Siddique Murder
Baba Siddique, a former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader, was shot dead outside the office of his son, former MLA Zeeshan Siddique, in Bandra East on October 12, 2024.
According to police, the killing was carried out by members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
In the Salman Khan firing case, Anmol himself sought to surrender and join the judicial proceedings. However, the plea is yet to be decided.
