Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle has died at the age of 92 in Mumbai, marking the end of an era in Indian music. The iconic singer was rushed to Breach Candy Hospital on April 11 after reportedly
suffering a cardiac arrest. She was taken to the emergency unit, where she passed away. While early reports pointed to a cardiac arrest, doctors later confirmed multi-organ failure as the cause of her death. The news of her passing was confirmed by Maharashtra’s Minister of Cultural Affairs Ashish Shelar, bringing clarity after hours of concern around her health. Her death has left fans, members of the film industry and music lovers across the country in mourning.

When and where are the last rites?
Details of her final rites have now been announced. Asha Bhosle’s mortal remains will be kept at her residence from 11 am to 3 pm tomorrow, allowing family, friends, colleagues and fans to pay their last respects.
Her last rites will take place later in the day at Shivaji Park at 4 pm. The venue, which has hosted the final journeys of several prominent figures, is expected to see a large turnout from across the film and music fraternity. Her son Anand Bhosle has told the media present outside the hospital, “Meri mataji Shrimati Asha Bhosle inka aaj nidhan ho chuka hai. Woh Jahan rehti thi, Casa grand lower parel 11am, wahan unke antim darshan honge, wahan aaiye aur kal dopahar ko 4 baje Shivaji park unka antim sanskar hoga (She passed away today. Those who wish to pay their last respects can visit her residence tomorrow at 11 am. The last rites will be performed tomorrow at 4 pm at Shivaji Park).”

A loss beyond generations
Asha Bhosle’s career spanned decades and generations, making her one of the most celebrated playback singers in Indian cinema. She has worked with some of the biggest composers in the industry, including Shankar-Jaikishan, Sachin Dev Burman, R.D. Burman, O.P. Nayyar, Ilaiyaraaja, Bappi Lahiri and A.R. Rahman, delivering countless iconic songs across languages and genres. Her contribution to music has been recognised with top honours such as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. Beyond playback singing, she also explored acting and appeared in the Marathi film Mai in 2013.
Asha Bhosle came from the iconic Mangeshkar family and was the sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, along with siblings Usha Mangeshkar, Meena Khadikar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar. She was first married to Ganpatrao Bhosle and later to composer R. D. Burman. She has three children — Hemant, Varsha (late), and Anand Bhosle — and her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle has also followed in her footsteps as a singer.
