Everyone loves a good “struggle to stardom” story and Bollywood has plenty of them. Before the fame, the award shows, and those larger-than-life red carpet moments, many of today’s biggest stars were quietly
blending into the background… literally. Yep, we’re talking about actors who once danced behind the leads or appeared as blink-and-miss extras on big movie sets. And honestly, it just makes their journeys even cooler.
Here’s a fun look at Bollywood actors you probably didn’t know started out as background dancers or extras
Shahid Kapoor
Long before he became the chocolate boy of Bollywood, Shahid was part of Shiamak Davar’s dance troupe. He was one of those super-energetic background dancers you’d spot in iconic films like Dil To Pagal Hai and even in the song Kahin Aag Lage from Taal. Cut to a few years later, and he made a smooth jump to leading roles with Ishq Vishk. Today, he’s known for pulling off everything from intense dramas like Haider to massy hits like Kabir Singh.
Ranveer Singh
It’s hard to imagine Ranveer blending into the background now, but that’s exactly where he started. For nearly five years, he worked as a background dancer, grooving in songs like It’s Magic from Koi… Mil Gaya and Bole Chudiyan from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. His big break came with Band Baaja Baaraat, and the rest is pure Bollywood energy—Padmaavat, Gully Boy, Simmba… you name it.
Dia Mirza
Before the pageants and polished red carpet looks, Dia Mirza had a humble start as a background performer. She even appeared in the song Jumbalakka from the Tamil film En Swasa Kaatre. Fun fact—she used the money from that gig to fund her first modelling portfolio. Soon after, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein made her a household name, and she went on to star in films like Parineeta and Sanju.
Arshad Warsi
Arshad’s journey is straight out of a Bollywood script. Facing financial struggles early on, he joined a dance group led by Akbar Sami and worked as a dancer and choreographer. He even choreographed the title track of Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja. Acting came later with Tere Mere Sapne, and eventually, he became everyone’s favourite Circuit in the Munna Bhai series.
Deepika Padukone
Before ruling Bollywood (and global red carpets), Deepika had brief stints as a model and background performer. Many remember her early appearance in Himesh Reshammiya’s music video Aap Kaa Surroor. Soon after, Om Shanti Om turned her into an overnight star. Today, she’s among the industry’s biggest names, thanks to films like Piku, Padmaavat, and Pathaan.
Daisy Shah
Daisy Shah started off behind the scenes as an assistant to choreographer Ganesh Acharya and also worked as a background dancer. She featured in songs like Bolo Bolo Kya Baat Hui from Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein. Over time, she moved into modelling, item numbers, and eventually lead roles, including Jai Ho alongside Salman Khan. She’s also been a familiar face on reality TV.
Pankaj Tripathi
Yes, even the incredibly intense Kaleen Bhaiyya had a blink-and-miss dance moment! Pankaj Tripathi appeared in the Namak song from Omkara. It’s a fun little throwback considering how he’s now known for his powerful performances across films and OTT.
Sushant Singh Rajput
Before becoming a star, Sushant was a trained dancer under Shiamak Davar. He performed as a background dancer at major events like the IIFA Awards, danced in the title track of Dhoom 2, and even shared the stage with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan during the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. His journey from dancer to leading man remains one of Bollywood’s most inspiring stories.
Kajal Aggarwal
Before becoming a big name in South Indian cinema, Kajal had a tiny appearance as a background dancer in Kyun…! Ho Gaya Na. She was seen in the song Uljhane, sharing screen space with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan… something most people totally missed!
Mouni Roy
Before TV fame and big Bollywood projects, Mouni Roy had a blink-and-miss role as a background dancer in Run. She appeared in the song Nahi Hona Nahi Hona. From there, she went on to become a household name on television and later made her mark in films like Brahmastra.
Which one shocked you the most?
