Top BCCI officials are set to meet Indian men’s cricket team’s chairman of selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, to discuss his future once the Sri Lanka tour concludes. Agarkar will be completing three years
as chief selector and is now eligible for a one-year extension.
According to The Indian Express, the BCCI was keen on Agarkar to continue in the role given India have won three ICC white-ball titles (two T20 World Cups and Champions Trophy) and two Asia Cups since he took over.
BCCI Vs Selectors On Rohit Sharma’s Future
It appears that the BCCI and selection committee are not on the same page with respect to Rohit Sharma‘s ODI future. During India’s ODI series in England, it was widely reported that Rohit had been told by the selectors that he wouldn’t be picked for the next assignment and they left it to him to take a call on his future.
Selectors reportedly wanted to give other players like Yashasvi Jaiswal an extended run as they start preparing a core team for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
However, after a couple of low scores in the first two matches, Rohit, in the third ODI which was being tipped as his last in India colours, blasted 138 to prove he can still perform at the top level.
The issue was further complicated as the BCCI secretary had already attempted to dispel the rumours over Rohit’s future, saying as long as he remains in the scheme of things, the former captain will continue to be picked for India.
“I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday. Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match,” Saikia told news agency PTI before Rohit scored a century at Lord’s.
Selectors Not Happy With BCCI?
Saikia’s public support didn’t go down well with the selectors, with one report claiming they felt ‘betrayed’ as the call to move on from Rohit was taken after consultation with the Indian team management. It led to speculations that the BCCI is mulling over not continuing with Agarkar, with batting legend VVS Laxman being considered for the role.
Rohit Keen To Continue
Rohit himself has no plans to hang up his boots yet and wants to continue representing India in ODIs. As per reports, he has met with a top BCCI official following his century at Lord’s and could be picked in India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against West Indies at home.
