The national capital and surrounding areas received widespread rain showers on Tuesday, which brought a sharp dip in the daytime temperatures as the mercury dropped to 16.9 degrees Celsius (maximum) –
recording a drop of more than 6 notches in just a day.
Despite the rain, Delhi did not witness an improvement in the Air Quality Index, which further deteriorated to the “very poor” category by evening.
The city’s maximum temperature dropped to 16.9 degrees Celsius, about 5 notches below the average and 6.3 degrees lower than Monday’s 23.2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature hovered around 8 degrees Celsius.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the capital is likely to see the return of dry weather from Wednesday. However, the weatherman has also sounded a yellow alert for light rain on Monday, February 1.
As per forecasts, the minimum temperatures are likely to remain between 11-13 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, which is likely to fall to around 7 degrees Celsius on Thursday and Friday.
By Saturday, the mercury may register a further dip to around 5 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature is expected to touch 21 degrees Celsius by the weekend.
AQI Dips To ‘Very Poor’
Despite the rainfall, Delhiites continued to grapple with the worsening air quality as the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) worsened from 241 (poor category) on Monday to 336 (very poor) on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, forecasts show improvement down to the “poor category” again on Wednesday, January 28.
According to the Centre’s Air Quality Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi, the city’s air quality is likely to fall into the “poor” range on January 28 and 29, which is expected to deteriorate to “very poor” again on January 30.
