As rains pounded the state capital on Monday, familiar scenes returned — waterlogged streets, stranded vehicles, traffic snarls, and frustrated commuters. Social media was flooded with visuals and memes highlighting the city’s persistent flooding woes.

As rainwater flooded Mumbai’s roads, a user likened it to Venice, tweeting, “Travelled 2+ hrs for internals… basically gave exam in Venice. Holiday? …Nah man travel with a boat par aana toh padega (sic)”

A third user joked with a hint of sarcasm, “People go to the beaches to see the sea. Here the sea felt the need to see the people(sic)”

Describing commuting amid heavy rain in Mumbai as “urban adventure,” a user wrote, “Finally, traveled in torrential rains, chaotic traffic that moved slower than #MondayMorningMotivation and the roads that looked more like rivers, but somehow made it to the destination! The Andheri subway was also closed for traffic due to severe waterlogging in the area, while visuals from Bandra and the Western Express Highway showed massive traffic jams.
A video from Kings Circle in Gandhi Market captured schoolchildren stranded inside buses being rescued by Mumbai Police and taken to safety at the Matunga Police Station.
News agency PTI, citing IMD data, reported that Mumbai’s Santacruz station recorded 99mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8:30 am Monday, while the Colaba observatory registered 38mm.
Further, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced the closure of all schools and colleges operating post-12 pm.
“Keeping in mind the safety of students due to the continuous rains that have been continuing since morning, Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai in the second semester i.e. after 12 noon on Monday, August 18,” the BMC posted on X.
The IMD has also issued red alerts for Thane and Raigad districts for the next two days.
