The excitement surrounding superstar Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated film Coolie has triggered an unexpected surge in ticket prices, particularly for the first-day, first-show (FDFS) screenings. In Chennai,
reports reveal that black market scalpers are selling these coveted tickets for as much as Rs 4,500.
Advance bookings for Coolie have seen unprecedented enthusiasm not only in Tamil Nadu but also across other Indian states and international markets. This overwhelming demand has unfortunately led to widespread black marketing. Single-screen cinemas and fan clubs have allegedly violated Tamil Nadu government regulations by inflating ticket prices.
A report from India Today highlights one Chennai theatre reportedly selling FDFS tickets for Rs 4,500. Meanwhile, in Pollachi, a theatre staff member was caught on camera selling tickets at Rs 400, well above the official price limit.
Sharing his frustration with the inflated prices, a dedicated Rajinikanth admirer told the outlet, “I have tried my luck at all the popular theatres in Chennai. Tickets are priced at Rs 600, Rs 1,000, with the highest being Rs 4,500. I can’t book online for the first show as they’re either blocked or sold out. Fans like me have no other choice but to buy in black or wait until later shows at regular rates.”
The frenzy is not limited to Tamil Nadu. Neighboring states have also witnessed rising prices for the dubbed versions of Coolie. Kerala and Karnataka have announced early morning shows starting as soon as 6 a.m., while Tamil Nadu’s first screening is set for 9 am in adherence to state government guidelines.
Scheduled for release on August 14, Coolie has already generated significant revenue, recovering over 66 per cent of its Rs 375 crore budget before hitting theatres.
According to Pinkvilla, the film’s makers have earned approximately Rs 250 crore through the sale of international distribution, digital streaming, music, and satellite rights.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie promises a quintessential Rajinikanth-style mass entertainer, featuring a star-studded cast including Nagarjuna, Sathyaraj, Aamir Khan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Shruti Haasan in key roles.
