Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, who has been assigned the additional charge of the Ministry of Education after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned amid protests over exam paper leaks, is one of the BJP’s most experienced
leaders.
Joshi currently holds the portfolios of Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy. In the previous term of the government, he served as the Union Minister for Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs.
Early Life And Entry Into Politics
Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi was born on November 27, 1962, in Vijayapura, Karnataka. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from K.S. Arts College, Hubballi, and Karnataka University, Dharwad.

Joshi entered public life through grassroots activism and organisational work. During his early political years, he was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later became active in the BJP’s organisational activities in Karnataka.
He came into prominence during the early 1990s through his involvement in public movements in Karnataka, including the Kittur Chennamma Circle (Idgah Maidan) flag-hoisting movement in Hubballi and the broader “Save Kashmir Movement” in 1992.
Rise Within BJP Karnataka
Joshi gradually emerged as one of the BJP’s prominent organisational leaders in Karnataka. His role in strengthening the party’s presence in the state helped him rise through the ranks.
He later served as the president of the BJP’s Karnataka unit, becoming an important leader from the state.
From Dharwad MP To National Leader
Joshi entered the Lok Sabha in 2004 after winning from the Dharwad constituency in Karnataka. He has since retained the seat through multiple elections and has been elected as an MP five consecutive times.
Over the years, he became a key BJP voice in Parliament and handled several important responsibilities within the party and the government.
Cabinet Journey Under PM Modi
After the BJP-led government came to power, Joshi was inducted into the Union Cabinet and was given charge of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines.
His role as Parliamentary Affairs Minister placed him at the centre of managing legislative coordination between the government and Parliament.
In the subsequent government, Joshi was given charge of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy.
Taking Charge Of Education Ministry
Following Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, Pralhad Joshi was assigned additional responsibility of the Education Ministry. His appointment comes at a time when the ministry is facing scrutiny over examination-related controversies and questions around the credibility of competitive exams.
With experience in party organisation, parliamentary affairs and multiple Union ministries, Joshi now faces the challenge of steering India’s education sector at a crucial juncture.
Joshi’s journey reflects the rise of a leader who moved from student and grassroots politics to state-level BJP leadership and eventually to the Union Cabinet. His transition from Karnataka politics to handling key national portfolios has made him one of the BJP’s prominent organisational leaders.
Pralhad Joshi on Saturday accepted the responsibility with humility and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for placing his trust in him. “I accept this responsibility with a sense of duty and humility. I am thankful to the Prime Minister. In the last 12 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, many historic achievements have been made,” he said.
