Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are reportedly set to share screen space after a gap of nearly 46 years. According to a report, the legendary actors are in talks for a new project that will see them essay
the roles of aging gangsters, marking a historic reunion. The film will be directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.
India Today has reported that Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan will play ageing gangsters in the film. The film was supposed to go on floors before the Covid-19 pandemic, but was put on hold. Now once again the talks have resumed and the untitled film is expected to go on floors soon.
If this project goes on floors, then director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s ‘Kaithi 2’, starring Karthi, will have to wait. Reports also suggest that the Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan film will be his upcoming project and the other films will have to wait.
Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have shared screen space in several films in the past. Their last on-screen appearance was ‘Alauddinum Albhuta Vilakkum’ in 1979.
Coolie:
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie is eyeing the coveted Rs 500 crore mark within its opening week. If it crosses that milestone in less than 10 days, the Rajinikanth-starrer will rewrite Tamil cinema records currently held by Leo (2023).
But the race isn’t easy. The film’s first weekday earnings fell sharply compared to both Leo and Jailer, sparking debate on whether Coolie can become the year’s highest-grossing Indian film.
Industry tracker Sacnilk reported that Coolie made Rs 12.15 crore nett in India on Monday, pushing its domestic total to Rs 206.67 crore. That’s a steep 65.53% drop from Sunday’s Rs 35.25 crore. While the collection is stronger than Rajinikanth’s underperforming Vettaiyan (Rs 5.6 crore on first Monday), it fell well short of Jailer (Rs 23.55 crore) and Leo. Even newer releases like Chhaava and Saiyaara brought in Rs 24 crore each on their first Monday, placing Coolie below them on the charts.
An excerpt from News18’s review of the film read, “The film showcases the charismatic Rajini that we have missed on screen for a while now. Kanagaraj has managed to bring the swag back with Rajinikanth making a power-packed comeback. There’s only one way you can enjoy the film — enter a theatre filled with fans of Thaialvar, as he is famously called, and be one among them and enjoy the massy dialogues, Rajini’s famous cigarette flip, sharp walks and a swag that keeps reminding you who is the boss.”
The action drama stars Rajinikanth alongside Nagarjuna Akkineni, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Rachita Ram and also features Aamir Khan in a cameo. Music is by Anirudh Ravichander.
Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2:
Jailer 2 is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action comedy film written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. It is produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures. A sequel to Jailer (2023), the film stars Rajinikanth reprising his role as the titular character alongside Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa Menon reprising their roles, with S. J. Suryah joining the cast. Shiva Rajkumar also makes a guest appearance in this film.
