Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday chaired a high-level Semiconductor Roundtable with leading global CEOs, calling for greater industry participation as India moves into the next phase of its semiconductor
journey and urging the country to aspire to be among the early leaders in emerging technologies.
The roundtable, held at Seva Teerth, brought together senior representatives from some of the world’s leading semiconductor and technology companies, including Micron, Infineon, Applied Materials, ASML, AMD, Intel, Tata Electronics, Lam Research, NXP, Foxconn, Tokyo Electron and Rapidus, among others.
PM Modi emphasised the importance of close collaboration between the government and the semiconductor industry in shaping India’s technology future. He highlighted India’s growing strengths in talent, technology adoption and infrastructure and called on industry leaders to play a greater role in skilling, innovation and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
Referring to the government’s target of training one crore people in AI, the Prime Minister said India’s large talent pool, combined with the experience and capabilities of global industry leaders, could create significant opportunities.
He said India should aspire to be among the early leaders in emerging technologies, while noting the progress made in the semiconductor sector in recent years and that India’s semiconductor ecosystem was now moving beyond foundational efforts towards a phase of greater scale and opportunity, and urged industry leaders to actively participate in this next phase of growth.
The Prime Minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to providing a predictable and responsive policy environment for the sector. At the same time, he stressed that policies would need to evolve alongside technological advancements and changing industry requirements.
He invited semiconductor industry leaders to share suggestions on policy and administrative measures that could further strengthen the ecosystem and assured them that their inputs would be given due consideration.
The CEOs, according to the government, appreciated the sustained efforts to build India’s semiconductor capabilities and highlighted progress in areas including manufacturing, chip design, infrastructure and talent development.
They also expressed confidence in the opportunities emerging under India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, and in India’s potential to build capabilities across the semiconductor value chain — from manufacturing and research and development to advanced technologies and supporting industries.
The industry leaders also expressed their commitment to contributing to India’s emergence as a globally competitive semiconductor and technology hub, according to the government.
The roundtable brought together an unusually broad cross-section of the global semiconductor ecosystem, with representatives from SEMI, Micron, Infineon, Applied Materials, ASML, Merck, Tokyo Electron, Fujifilm, AMD, Intel, Tata Electronics, Lam Research, Rapidus, NXP, Foxconn, Semiconductor Devices, Advantest, Celesta Capital, CG Power and IBM Research, among others.
The meeting comes as India seeks to expand its semiconductor capabilities across the value chain and strengthen its position in advanced technology
