A court in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior has sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing her five-year-old son. The incident occurred on April 28, 2023.
Jyoti Rathore, wife of police constable Dhyan Singh
Rathore, was allegedly involved in an affair with her neighbour Uday Indolia. Investigators said that Jyoti’s son, Jatin, saw his mother in a compromising position with Uday.
Fearing that Jatin might tell his father, Dhyan, about what he had seen, Jyoti took a drastic step and threw her five-year-old son from the roof of a two-storey building. The child suffered critical injuries and succumbed within 24 hours despite efforts to save him.
Initially, Jatin’s death was treated as an accident due to a fall from a rooftop. However, after fifteen days the crime was committed, Jyoti broke down and confessed to Dhyan.
Dhyan had begun to suspect that something was amiss following his son’s death. He allegedly recorded several audio and video conversations in which Jyoti confessed to the act and also gathered CCTV footage from cameras installed at their residence.
Armed with these incriminating materials, Dhyan approached the police and filed a complaint.
Police registered a case naming Jyoti and her lover, Uday, as the accused. Following the investigation, a charge sheet was filed in court. During the trial, the court found Jyoti guilty on the basis of the evidence on record and sentenced her to life imprisonment, NDTV reported.
Later, Uday was acquitted, with the court citing a lack of evidence against him.
Thatipur Police Station in-charge Kamal Kishore said the case was registered on the husband’s complaint, and the investigation, including a review of CCTV footage, pointed to the wife’s involvement.
Government Advocate Dharmendra Sharma said the court relied on circumstantial evidence to convict Jyoti, while the second accused was given the benefit of the doubt.
