There are many aspects of train travel that passengers see and hear about but rarely understand in detail. One such feature is the unusual layer found on AC coach seats.
If you’ve travelled by train, you might
have noticed a flap of extra rexine attached to the main seat fabric. But have you ever wondered what it’s for?
Social Media Sparks Curiosity
Recently, a train passenger shared a photo of this layer on Reddit’s r/indianrailways forum, asking the community about its purpose. In the image, the user lifts the flap, which is stitched only halfway and leaves just enough space to slip your fingers in.
The Reddit post read, “I’m travelling by train after a long time and wondering why this extra layer is given on the seat. Usually, such things have a purpose, but often people don’t know about them.”
Purpose Of The Seat Layer
So, why is this layer present on train seats? It is designed to hold the bed sheets provided in AC coaches.

AC coach usually provides passengers with two sheets and a blanket. One sheet is spread on the seat, and the corners can be tucked into this flap so the sheet doesn’t slip when passengers turn over or lie down.
Social Media Reaction
Many users commented that they had never noticed the purpose of the flap. One wrote that during their last journey, they simply spread the sheet over it, and it kept slipping.
Another joked that they too were unaware of the flap’s purpose, explaining why their sheet never stayed in place while others’ did.
