Donald Trump has gone viral after joking about his phone’s autocorrect repeatedly changing First Lady Melania Trump’s name to “Melody” in his social media posts.
Speaking during a Military Mother’s Day
event, Trump described how autocorrect on his phone kept altering Melania’s name whenever he tried posting online.
“They have spell correct and word correct on these crazy machines that we use to put out truths, or they used to be called tweets,” Trump said during the event.
Explaining the mix-up, he added: “Every time I wrote Melania, it would correct to Melody… and sometimes I wouldn’t proofread it.”
According to the report, Trump said the repeated typo led to heavy criticism online.
“I would get just absolutely decimated,” he said. “They said ‘he didn’t know the name of his wife! He keeps calling her Melody!’”
Trump also joked that he initially had no idea autocorrect was responsible for the errors.
“What the hell is wrong with this machine? I didn’t know about that little feature, but I got that corrected eventually,” he remarked.
The US President then claimed the military eventually stepped in to help him fix the issue.
“You know who corrected it? The military! I said, ‘come here, you got to correct this. You’re killing me!’” Trump said.
The clip quickly spread across social media after being shared on X by commentator Nick Sortor, with reactions ranging from amusement to criticism. Some users described the moment as “comedy gold,” while others argued the controversy around the typo had been exaggerated.
Several social media users also pointed out that smartphone autocorrect settings can usually be customised.
“With iPhone, if you add any word as a contact, it will stop autocorrecting it,” one user commented online, according to the report.
