An Air India Express Boeing 737 operating flight IX 415 from Cochin to Abu Dhabi was forced to turn back mid-flight after the crew detected a rapid fall in the oil quantity of Engine 1.
The aircraft was
nearly 50 minutes into the flight and cruising at an altitude of 36,000 feet when the pilot and co-pilot noticed that the Engine 1 oil quantity was dropping rapidly.
With the oil level continuing to fall, the crew assessed the situation and subsequently decided to abandon the Abu Dhabi sector and return to Cochin, it was known.
According to news agency ANI, the crew first noticed the rapidly declining oil quantity on Engine 1 while the Boeing 737 was at 36,000 feet.
As the oil quantity continued to decrease, the crew carried out an assessment to evaluate the situation and determine the appropriate course of action.
The assessment was followed by the decision to discontinue the flight to Abu Dhabi and return to the departure airport at Cochin.
The situation subsequently escalated when the Engine 1 oil pressure entered the danger zone. The crew then shut down the affected engine.
The aircraft landed safely at Cochin International Airport.
The number of passengers and crew on board the flight at the time of the incident was not known.
