Passion and perseverance can lead to great achievements, and Ian Smith from Leeds, Britain, exemplifies this. Recently named ‘Britain’s Best Ice Cream Man’, Ian has transformed his lifelong passion into
a thriving business, My Whippy Leeds. Starting by helping his father as a child, Ian, 57, now owns a fleet of modern vans and vintage trucks, delighting customers across the city.
Ian’s journey is deeply rooted in family tradition. He shares that his father, also named Ian, began selling ice cream in 1962 at the age of 14. Today, at 76, his father still drives his van once or twice a week. At just 15, he bought an ice cream van without a driving licence and used to sell ice cream while going to school. Following in his father’s footsteps, Junior Ian knew from an early age that this was the path he wanted to pursue.
The business began modestly, with eight-year-old Ian helping his father clean the van and assist with daily operations. Over time, he honed his skills and gained his father’s trust, eventually buying his own van and expanding the family legacy.
Family support has played a key role in Ian’s success. His daughters, Stephanie, 34, and Leanne, 32, assist their mother Tracy in running the business, ensuring that My Whippy Leeds continues to flourish across the city.

Ian now owns four new Mercedes vans and three vintage trucks, making him a leader in the ice cream industry. Despite his success, he continues to serve customers personally, a passion he has nurtured since the age of eight.
His achievements have been widely recognised. After winning the ‘Mobiler of the Year’ title in 2020, he also received the ‘Champions Award’ in 2025, cementing his reputation as Britain’s top ice cream man.
Innovation and sustainability are central to his approach. Ian has introduced low-emission technology in his vans, combining tradition with modern, environmentally conscious practices.
Reflecting on his journey, Ian says his success would not have been possible without his father’s guidance and family support. For him, doing something well and passionately is the key to achieving excellence, whether it’s scooping ice cream or running a thriving business.
