Ingredients To Make Tamarind Candy
- 1 cup tamarind (seeds removed)
- ½ cup seedless dates
- 1 cup grated jaggery
- 1 tsp red chilli powder (optional – reduce for children)
- 1 tsp chaat masala
- ½ tsp roasted cumin powder
- Salt to taste
- 1 tsp ghee (clarified butter)
- 1 cup hot water (for soaking)
How To Make Tamarind Candy?
- Soak the tamarind and dates in hot water for about 30 minutes or until soft.
- Blend the mixture with a little water to form a smooth paste.
- Strain the paste, then pour it into a non-stick pan and cook over a low flame.
- Add the grated jaggery and stir continuously until it melts and blends well. Keep stirring to prevent the mixture from sticking.
- Once it thickens slightly and develops a glossy sheen, switch off the heat and allow it to cool.
- Mix in the red chilli powder, chaat masala, roasted cumin powder, and salt. Combine well.
- Add a teaspoon of ghee for a glossy finish and soft texture.
- Spread the mixture on a greased plate and let it cool completely. Once firm, cut into small pieces.
- Roll each piece in icing sugar if you like, and wrap in butter paper or cling film.
Storage & Additional Tips
- Store in an airtight container and it’ll keep for several days.
- If making for children, you can reduce the chilli or leave it out entirely.
- Want to add a twist? Sprinkle in some desiccated coconut or sesame seeds.
