The process for filing nominations for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026 began on Monday, marking a significant step in the state’s election calendar. Election authorities have issued detailed guidelines
to ensure submissions are conducted smoothly, transparently, and in an orderly manner across all constituencies.
The upcoming Tamil Nadu election goes beyond the classic rivalry between the Dravidian powerhouses DMK and AIADMK. This time, the contest features a multi-cornered fight, with the BJP making aggressive gains, the NTK leveraging its organisational strength, and the highly anticipated debut of actor Vijay’s TVK.
To claim a majority in the state Assembly, a party or coalition must win at least 118 seats.
Rules For Filing Nominations
Candidates must follow strict rules when submitting their papers. Each candidate is allowed a maximum of three vehicles, which must be parked at least 100 metres from the Returning Officer’s office. Only the candidate and up to three accompanying persons are permitted inside the office to submit nomination forms.
Although the official window for filing nominations spans eight days, only four working days are available due to public holidays. Candidates are therefore planning their submissions carefully to avoid last-minute complications.
ECI Introduces Online Nomination Submission
The Election Commission of India (ECI) now allows candidates to fill out nomination forms online through its official portal. Despite this digital option, candidates must still submit the physical copies in person to the Returning Officer before the prescribed deadline.
Officials have emphasized the need for accuracy, urging candidates to carefully verify all details, including personal information and names, to avoid rejection during the scrutiny process.
For the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will feature a recent colour photograph of each candidate. Candidates are required to submit a photograph taken within the last three months along with their nomination papers.
Additionally, each candidate must file a sworn affidavit detailing their credentials by 3 pm on April 6, the final day for nominations.
