Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday that Moscow would continue working with Iran despite threats of military action and economic pressure from the United States.
The Russian minister
made the remarks at a news conference in Moscow, dismissing Washington’s statements as damaging to international stability.
Lavrov said Russia would carry on implementing bilateral agreements with Tehran and that no external power could alter the nature of the relationship between the two countries. He underlined that ties were based on agreements reached by the presidents of both states and serve the interests of their peoples.
Asked about the United States’ growing pressure on Iran, including threats of possible attacks and tariffs on countries that cooperate with Tehran, Lavrov criticised Washington’s approach.
“Our American colleagues look unreliable when they act in this way,” he said, accusing the US of abandoning principles it once promoted.
Lavrov also said the United States was contributing to the fragmentation of the international system it helped build, pointing to what he described as an illegal operation to overthrow Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and threats against Iran. In his view, these actions weakened the framework of international law and damaged Washington’s credibility.
The Russian foreign minister insisted that Moscow and Tehran were committed to fulfilling their agreements, saying that no third country could change the fundamental nature of their ties. He noted that cooperation includes ongoing economic and infrastructure projects, and that relations were developed in line with mutual interests.
Lavrov’s comments came amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. US President Donald Trump has warned of “strong action” over unrest in Iran and threatened punitive measures against nations doing business with Tehran, including possible tariffs. Iran, in turn, has accused the US of seeking to provoke instability as protests continue across the country.
