In a major setback to Congress ahead of the Assembly elections, Assam Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi on Tuesday tendered his resignation to Mallikarjun Kharge, ending his lifelong association with the party
amid allegations of internal mistreatment.
In a letter addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Bordoloi said, “With an overwhelming sense of sadness today, I hereby tender my resignation from all posts, privileges and the primary membership of the Indian National Congress.”
While speaking to the reporters, Bordoloi said, “Today, I have abandoned one of the most important principles of my life, and I am not happy with it. However, I made this decision because I was being insulted on many issues by anyone who approached me from within the Congress Party, especially in the Assam Congress.”
“Even the Congress leadership was not showing sympathy towards me. I have become very lonely because I have been associated with the Congress all my life. But of late, I have been having a lot of difficulty surviving, so I have to make this decision. Yes, I have submitted this resignation letter to the AICC President,” he added.

Assam CM Responds
Responding to the news of Bordoloi’s resignation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while speaking to the reporters, said, “I am not in touch with Pradyut Bordoloi. If he had spoken to the Union Home Minister, I would know, but I don’t think he has spoken to any BJP leader yet. There is a possibility that we can have contact with Pradyut Bordoloi.”
Earlier in February, Congress leader Bhupen Kumar Borah also resigned from the party and reflected on his 32-year political career, highlighting his rise from MLA to Assam Congress chief and his role in shaping the party’s alliances in the state.
Following his resignation, Sarma met him, fueling speculation of a high-profile political switch ahead of the state assembly elections. The meeting came a day after Borah submitted his resignation from Congress, raising concerns within the party just weeks before the polls.
Assam Assembly Polls 2026
Assam is set to go to the polls on April 9, 2026, while the counting of votes will take place on May 4, 2026. The contest for the 126-member Assam legislative assembly is expected to revolve around the BJP-led alliance and a Congress-led opposition bloc that is still trying to consolidate support.
In the Assam Legislative Assembly election 2021, the BJP-led alliance retained power comfortably. The party won 60 seats, while the Asom Gana Parishad secured nine seats. The United People’s Party Liberal, meanwhile, won six seats. Together, the alliance crossed the majority mark.
The Congress-led opposition managed around 50 seats, while smaller regional parties secured a handful.
