If you have been trying to mark your calendar for Diwali 2025 and keep running into conflicting dates, you are not alone. This year, the Festival of Lights seems to be bringing a little mystery along with
its sparkle. Across social media, WhatsApp groups, and even traditional panchangs (Hindu calendars), there has been a bit of a debate going on. Some say Diwali will be celebrated on October 20th, others are confident it is on October 21st, and a few astrologers have even mentioned the possibility of a “split Diwali”, meaning that different regions or traditions might celebrate on different days. The French Embassy in India has captured the confusion perfectly through a lighthearted video.
‘Confused About The Diwali Date?’
“Confused about the Diwali date? So are we! But one thing’s certain: lights, joy, and sweets await! Watch our special video on Deepavali – the festival of lights,” the embassy wrote on X.
The accompanying video shows Embassy employees in humorous scenarios showing the confusion around Diwali’s date. In one scene, an employee jokes about buying two kurtas since Diwali appears to fall on different days. “Mainay toh 2 kapray khareede hain,” he said.
Another is seen speaking to a flower vendor, asking him to deliver flowers on the 20th, while the vendor insists Diwali is on the 21st. The employee then decides to split the order, half on October 20 and the rest on October 21.
A person in the video receives an invitation to a “Diwali Party” but is unsure which date to attend. A colleague advises her, “Dono din mana lo, problem solved,” suggesting celebrating on both days.
In the kitchen, a chef asks whether the kaju katlis he is preparing are for the 20th or 21st, to which his boss responds that they should make enough for both days.
The video concludes with a message, “Whether it’s on the 20th or 21st of October, the lights of Diwali always shine bright.”
