The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a temporary 5% reduction in water supply across several parts of Mumbai and its eastern suburbs between April 20 and April 27.
The decision comes
in view of essential maintenance work on critical components of the city’s water distribution system, as reported in Mid-Day.
Maintenance Work On Key Water Tunnels
According to civic officials, the planned work will involve processes such as charging, flushing, chlorination and dechlorination of Water Tunnel No 1 (AMT-1) and Water Tunnel No 2 (AMT-2). These tunnels form a vital backbone of Mumbai’s water supply network, ensuring steady distribution across multiple zones.
Water Tunnel No 1 channels water from Amar Mahal (Hegdewar Garden) to Wadala (Pratiksha Nagar), extending further to Parel (Sadakant Dhavan Garden). Water Tunnel No 2, on the other hand, carries supply from Amar Mahal to the Trombay Low-Level and High-Level Reservoirs, supporting water availability in several key localities.
The BMC has stated that these maintenance measures are necessary to enhance the long-term efficiency, safety and reliability of the city’s water infrastructure.
Areas Likely To Be Affected
The temporary 5% reduction in supply will impact multiple wards, particularly in the eastern suburbs. These include L ward (Kurla East), M East, M West, N, S and T wards.
In addition, parts of south and central Mumbai falling under A, B, C, E, F North and F South wards are also expected to experience reduced water supply during the maintenance period.
Residents Advised To Use Water Sparingly
The civic body has urged residents in the affected areas to exercise restraint in water usage and cooperate with authorities while the work is underway.
Officials emphasised that the inconvenience is short-term and aimed at strengthening the overall resilience of Mumbai’s water supply system.
This announcement follows an earlier advisory issued on April 10 regarding a separate water supply disruption in parts of south Mumbai. The BMC had informed that water supply would be affected for approximately 18 hours from 10 am on April 16 to 4 am on April 17.
As part of that operation, the civic body planned to install two 1500 mm butterfly valves on a tunnel water pipeline located along Haji Bunder Road in the F South ward, near Sewri. This upgrade is intended to improve and regulate water flow from key reservoirs, including Bhardavada Hill Reservoir, Phosberry Hill Reservoir and Golnaji Hill Reservoir.
Due to the maintenance work, several areas under A, B, C, E and F South wards were expected to face either a complete shutdown or low-pressure water supply during the operation period. The disruption was anticipated to affect residential neighbourhoods, commercial establishments, hospitals and government offices.
Overall, while these temporary measures may cause short-term inconvenience, the BMC maintains that such upgrades and maintenance activities are essential to ensure a more stable and efficient water supply system for Mumbai in the long run.
