Iran has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s newly announced economic sanctions campaign, calling it a “diversion from America’s own crisis”. Tehran warned that “doubling down on failed policies” would
only bring “further defeat” to the US.
The remarks unfolded against the backdrop of Trump’s latest salvo against Iran, in which he announced what he described as the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY” as the talks between the two countries remain at a stalemate.
In a post on ‘X’, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi wrote: “The so-called “Economic D-Day” is a diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs.”

Araghchi described the US President’s latest announcement as “economic terrorism”, saying: “Doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat—and enmity of Iranians. US economic terrorism threatens global economy and sovereignty worldwide.”
The Iranian minister cited media reports that suggested that America’s national debt has hit USD 40 trillion. The report said while President Trump had promised to restore the fiscal order, many of his policies added to the debt burden.

Trump’s ‘Economic D-Day’ Warning
As talks between the US and Iran remain deadlocked, Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened countries, banks and businesses helping Iran with what he calls “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences”.
In a post on Truth Social, he declared what he described as the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY”, calling it “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale”

“This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat”, Trump wrote.
However, the US President refrained from taking names or specifically mentioning what the proposed penalties entailed.
Amidst the war, the US Treasury has for months been carrying out ‘Operation Economic Fury’, aiming to cut off Tehran’s funding with targeted sanctions.
The war in West Asia broke out on February 28 this year, when the US-Israel alliance launched coordinated strikes against Iran amid stalled talks over Tehran’s nuclear programme. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several of his family members were killed in the strikes that fueled the conflict in the region.
Subsequently, Iran blocked the vital Strait of Hormuz –– which accounts for nearly one-fifth of the global energy trade –– with the global economies plunging chaos.
US-Iran Ceasefire Expires
This Monday, a preliminary ceasefire between the US and Iran expired, with Trump saying no talks were planned with Tehran. He added that the US naval blockade of Iranian ports would continue.
“There are no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the US President said in a post on Truth Social.
“The Naval Blockade remains in full force and effect. The Hormuz Strait is open and operating. All water mines have been removed or detonated,” he added.
