The temperatures are constantly on the rise this summer in India, with almost all parts of the country dealing with heat-wave-like conditions. This means that the air conditioners are running double to
keep the unbearable heat at bay. And like all good things in excess can turn awry, using the air conditioner for the entire day can have some adverse effects on our skin and hair.
A new day and a new Instagram Reel is going viral on the internet that talks about how using the air conditioner can suck out the moisture from your skin. It can also ruin your hair if you are constantly in spaces that are air-conditioned.
The video suggests adding bowls of water around the room or spreading out wet cloths to ensure that while the AC cools the room, it doesn’t get too dry. As the water evaporates, it is added back into the air. This can help with how your skin absorbs moisture, and with the dryness one might feel when they are in the AC all day. AC removes humidity, so placing a small humidifier in the room also helps add moisture back to the air.
Here are some other ways you can incorporate into your beauty routine to help with the dryness you feel by staying in an air-conditioned room all day:
Keep your skin hydrated inside and out
Drink plenty of water through the day. Aim for at least 2–3 litres, so your skin stays plump. Use a rich moisturiser in the morning and at night, preferably with ingredients like glycerine or hyaluronic acid to lock in water.
Protect your hair from AC blow
Avoid sitting directly in the path of the AC vent, which can dry and tangle hair. Use a light leave‑in conditioner or some hair oil on the ends to keep them soft. Tie long hair loosely so it does not catch the cold air stream.
Choose gentle, hydrating skincare
Use fragrance‑free, hydrating face washes, and avoid over‑washing if you sit in AC all day. A weekly hydrating mask and occasional facial steam or a gentle facial oil can compensate for the dry environment.
Limit AC time and lower the temperature slightly
Take short breaks outside the AC or open a window for some natural airflow. Keep the temperature around 24–26°C instead of very low settings so your body does not get dry from the extreme cool. This small change helps your skin and hair stay healthier through the summer.
