United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday lashed out at a CNN reporter during an Oval Office appearance, repeatedly interrupting her and calling her “fake news” after she questioned him about North
Korea and his relationship with leader Kim Jong Un.
The confrontation unfolded during an event honouring 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams, who was invited to the White House after rescuing a 10-year-old Indian-origin boy from powerful waves at a California beach.
Reporter Questions About Trump’s Aide
CNN reporter Kristen Holmes first asked Trump about remarks made by Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff concerning the president’s relationship with executive assistant Natalie Harp.
The question drew an immediate rebuke from the White House’s Rapid Response account on X.
“Someday, your children will come across your disgusting and inhumane question,” the account said, sharing footage of the exchange.
The White House accused Holmes of using an event celebrating a teenage hero to raise an unrelated issue involving one of Trump’s staff members.
“POTUS hosts a hero lifeguard in the Oval Office and she uses it as an opportunity to take a cheap shot about one of President Trump’s staffers,” the account said.
“These scumbags are the lowest of the low,” it added.
Trump Faces Question Over Ties With Kim
The confrontation escalated later when Holmes questioned Trump about North Korea.
Trump was discussing his relationship with Kim Jong Un and defending his decision to scale back US military exercises with South Korea. The president said his dealings with the North Korean leader had helped make the Korean Peninsula safer.
“Kim Jong-un has always treated me with great respect,” Trump said. “I understand him, he understands me,” he said.
When Holmes asked whether Kim had specifically sought a reduction in the US-South Korea military exercises, Trump interrupted her.
“Quiet. You’re very disrespectful in front of this young man, okay?” Trump said.
As Holmes attempted to continue, Trump asked which organisation she represented.
“I’m with CNN,” she replied. “Fake news,” Trump responded.
Trump then described Holmes as “a loud, boisterous person” and repeatedly ordered her to be quiet.
“Quiet. Quiet. Quiet. CNN, fake news. You’re fake news. You’re a loud– You’re a loud, boisterous person. You’re fake news. Be quiet. Be quiet. Be quiet. You’re a fake reporter and you report fake news,” he said.
The exchange came after Trump said he had maintained backchannel communication concerning Kim, although he did not provide details about the nature or timing of those contacts.
Trump’s decision to scale back military drills with South Korea has drawn scrutiny, with critics questioning whether the move could affect Washington’s longstanding security commitments to Seoul. Trump has maintained that his personal relationship with Kim makes the region safer.
USS Abraham Lincoln ‘Fake News’ Claim
Trump also faced questions about reports concerning conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.
The president rejected reports of food shortages aboard the vessel as “fake news”, saying the ship was “beautifully maintained and beautifully taken care of”.
Trump cited comments from a retired admiral who he said had spoken to him about the aircraft carrier.
The comments came amid broader scrutiny of the USS Abraham Lincoln and the conditions aboard the vessel.
White House Targets CNN Reporter
The White House’s criticism of Holmes extended beyond Trump’s remarks in the Oval Office. Its Rapid Response team described her as a “disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment” and accused her of using the lifeguard event to target a member of Trump’s staff.
CNN rejected the administration’s attacks, saying they were “beneath the office”.
“We stand firmly behind Kristen and reject these attacks in the strongest possible terms,” the network said in a statement.
The dispute comes amid increased attention on Harp, a former television news personality who has become a prominent presence around Trump. She is frequently seen accompanying the president and has been dubbed the “human printer” for supplying him with printed material.
Harp was also reportedly among the few aides with Trump during a secret Air Force One aircraft swap in July.
Ossoff, a Democratic senator and potential 2028 presidential contender, had accused Trump during a campaign speech on Sunday of wanting to “build his ballroom and travel with Natalie” instead of doing his job.
Trump responded by attacking Ossoff as a “Pee-wee Herman lookalike” and defending his planned $400 million White House ballroom, but did not directly address the remarks about Harp.
The latest clash adds to a growing pattern of confrontations between the Trump administration and female journalists, with the White House increasingly using its rapid-response operation to publicly challenge reporters over questions directed at the president.
