Saif Ali Khan has often experimented with the kind of roles he takes on, and Cocktail was one of the films that marked an interesting phase in his career. Released in 2012, the romantic comedy saw him
share the screen with Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty, who played Veronica and Meera, respectively. Years later, Saif has revealed what made him agree to headline the film and take on the role of Gautam.
Saif Ali Khan reveals real reason behind doing Cocktail
Speaking to Gulf News, Saif Ali Khan described doing Cocktail as a “mistake” and explained that his decision was largely driven by his role as the film’s producer. Since he was backing the project, the actor wanted to make sure the film was completed and eventually made it to the screen. He said, “I did the part because we were producing it, it was an inevitable mistake, 100 percent that was a mistake, and that was a slightly regressive script choice. Otherwise, it was a breezy fun entertainer.”
Saif went on to add, “I didn’t do it for the role, I did it so the film could get made. You do things for various reasons. I knew fully well that the exciting role is the Veronica part but it’s one of those things you do anyway.”
In the same conversation, the actor, who is currently busy promoting Haiwaan, spoke about Sajid Khan’s Humshakals that released in 2014. He said that he was a “miscast” in the film. Saif continued, “I personally think that I was a miscast in Humshakals because it’s not my thing. There were certain actors who could really pull that off and you need a kind of commitment and the ability to make people laugh on a very slightly different level, which perhaps I wasn’t able to convince myself to do or wasn’t just basically good enough in it.”
He further said, “I think Sajid expected me to do that stuff…perhaps….like Akshay Kumar could have done it; that was the mistake but I stand by the movie, and I stand by him (Sajid), and of course, we have to all stand by our movies.”
Meanwhile, Saif is set to be seen with Akshay in Priyadarshan’s Haiwaan. It also stars Shriya Pilgaonkar and Saiyami Kher in key roles. The film hit theatres on September 11.
