The much-anticipated Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is expected to be inaugurated on April 14 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and is likely to drastically reduce travel time between the two cities.
Once operational,
the journey between Delhi and Dehradun is expected to take around 2.5 hours, compared to the current 6 hours. Travel time between Delhi and Haridwar is also likely to come down to nearly 2 hours from the existing 5-hour duration.
Route And Key Connectivity
Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 12,000 crore, the expressway will begin near Akshardham Temple in Delhi and extend up to Dehradun. Along its route, it will pass through several towns in Uttar Pradesh, including Baghpat, Baraut, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, and Saharanpur.
The project also includes a spur connection towards Haridwar and will link with the Char Dham Highway, thereby improving access to major hill stations and pilgrimage destinations across Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
Faster Than Train Travel
As reported by The Indian Express, the expressway, designed for speeds of up to 100 kmph, is expected to cut travel time by over three hours, making it faster than existing rail options.
According to Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the fastest train on this route is the Anand Vihar-Dehradun Vande Bharat Express, which covers approximately 302 km in about 4 hours and 45 minutes. The expressway, by comparison, is likely to reduce this journey by more than two hours.
Other rail options include the Dehradun Shatabdi Express, which takes around 6 hours 10 minutes (with fares of approximately Rs 920 for AC Chair Car and Rs 1,420 for Executive Chair Car), and the Jan Shatabdi Express, which takes about 5 hours 45 minutes (with fares starting at Rs 175 for Second Sitting and Rs 545 for AC Chair Car).
Travel To Mussoorie Becomes Quicker
For travellers heading to Mussoorie, the expressway is expected to further shorten overall travel time to around 4 hours from Delhi.
Currently, a train journey via the Vande Bharat Express takes about 4 hours and 45 minutes to reach Dehradun, followed by an additional 1.5-hour road trip to Mussoorie, bringing the total travel time to roughly 6.5 hours.
The new expressway could therefore save close to two hours on this route.
Cost Comparison: Cab Vs Train
As per estimates from MakeMyTrip, cab fares from Delhi to Dehradun range between Rs 2,734 and Rs 7,409 (excluding taxes and additional charges), depending on the type of vehicle.
In comparison, fares on the Vande Bharat Express are approximately Rs 1,075 per person for AC Chair Car and Rs 1,900 per person for Executive Chair Car.
For a group of four travellers, hiring a cab could prove more economical than purchasing individual train tickets. However, for solo travellers, train travel, especially via the Vande Bharat Express, remains the more affordable option.
Flight Option: Fastest But Costlier
Air travel remains the quickest way to reach Dehradun from Delhi, with a flight duration of around 1 hour and 10 minutes. However, it is significantly more expensive than road or rail travel.
According to IRCTC data as of April 12, flight tickets for April 15 start at approximately Rs 4,089 per person, making it a pricier alternative despite the shorter travel time.
A Major Boost To Connectivity
Overall, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is expected to transform travel in the region by offering faster, more efficient connectivity.
By reducing travel time and improving access to key destinations, the project is set to benefit both daily commuters and tourists.
