Mumbai Indians faced Sunrisers Hyderabad in their eighth match of the ongoing IPL 2026 season on Wednesday, April 29, in Mumbai and suffered a humiliating defeat by 6 wickets. The Mumbai-based franchise
rode on Ryan Rickelton’s maiden IPL century (123 from 55 balls) to post a big total of 243/5 in 20 overs. But despite having the likes of Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Allah Ghazanfar in their ranks, they failed to defend it. In fact, the Orange Army chased down the target of 244 runs in just 18.4 overs to secure a memorable win by 6 wickets.
IPL 2026 | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap
The defeat against the Orange Army in front of home fans is MI’s sixth loss in this year’s IPL, and with a total of just 4 points from eight matches played so far, the five-time champions are 9th in the IPL 2026 points table.
IPL 2026 points table after MI vs SRH match on April 29
| POSITION | TEAM | MATCHES | WINS | DEFEATS | NO RESULT | POINTS | NET RUN RATE |
| 1. | Punjab Kings | 8 | 6 | 1 | 1 | 13 | 1.043 |
| 2. | Royal Challengers Bengaluru | 8 | 6 | 2 | 0 | 12 | 1.919 |
| 3. | Sunrisers Hyderabad | 9 | 6 | 3 | 0 | 12 | 0.832 |
| 4. | Rajasthan Royals | 9 | 6 | 3 | 0 | 12 | 0.617 |
| 5. | Gujarat Titans | 8 | 4 | 4 | 0 | 8 | -0.475 |
| 6. | Chennai Super Kings | 8 | 3 | 5 | 0 | 6 | -0.121 |
| 7. | Delhi Capitals | 7 | 3 | 5 | 0 | 6 | -1.060 |
| 8. | Kolkata Knight Riders | 8 | 2 | 5 | 1 | 5 | -0.751 |
| 9. | Mumbai Indians | 8 | 2 | 6 | 0 | 4 | -0.784 |

But despite being at the second-last position in the points table after the 41st of IPL 2026, MI are alive in the playoffs race. However, the margin of error for them is negligible now.
Mumbai Indians will finish in the top four and qualify for the playoffs if they manage to win all of their remaining six league matches by big margins.
If MI manage to secure six big wins in a row, they will end the league stage of May 24, 2026, with a total of 16 points, and 16 points are enough to qualify for the playoffs.
In the previous four editions of the IPL (since the IPL became a 10-team tournament), a team that amassed a total of 16 points finished 4th in the points table and featured in the Eliminator match. In fact, in the 2025 edition of IPL, MI wrapped the league stage with 16 points from 14 matches and played the eliminator match vs Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh.
But if MI lose even one of their remaining matches, then they will finish with a maximum of 14 points. And 14 points will not be enough for them to finish in the top-four positions and advance to the playoffs.
If MI win five matches and one game ends in a draw (due to rain), then also it will be difficult for MI to qualify for the playoffs. In IPL 2025, Delhi Capitals finished the league stage with 15 points, but it wasn’t enough to secure a top-four finish.
MI to face CSK, RCB, PBKS, RR in coming games

MI suffered a humiliating defeat by 103 runs in the season’s first Clasico that was played on April 23 in Mumbai. The five-time champions will be eager to settle the scores and keep themselves alive.
Following that match in Chennai, the Mumbai Indians will return to Mumbai and take on the Lucknow Super Giants at Wankhede Stadium on Monday, May 4. Like MI, LSG has also lost six out of eight matches played so far in IPL 2026.
