Priyansh Arya and Ruturaj Gaikwad were involved in one of the most chaotic run-outs in the history of televised cricket on Tuesday (June 9). Playing for India ‘A’ against Sri Lanka ‘A’ in the 50-over tri-series
opener in Dambulla , Priyansh was run out thanks to a miscommunication with Ruturaj Gaikwad, and the Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella mistakenly stopped the former’s bat from reaching the crease.
It happened on the last ball of the 13th over. Ruturaj pushed a wide ball from Ravindu Fernando to deep point. The duo completed the first run easily before Priyansh seemed to take a few steps for the second. The Punjab Kings batter then reneged and turned around, but Gaikwad was more than halfway through.
This created a moment that not even the best movie scriptwriters could imagine. Priyansh and Gaikwad were at equal distance from the batting crease, and cricket’s rules say whoever makes it first will be safe. As both extended their bats forward, Priyansh’s bat got stopped by Dickwella’s foot, as the gloveman extended his body to collect the throw from deep, allowing Gaikwad to reach mini-seconds before his partner.
Dickwella saw both players in the crease and smartly threw the ball on the other end, where the bowler broke the stumps. If it wasn’t for Dickwella’s foot, Priyansh would have survived, and Gaikwad would have been run out. Watch it here:

Miscommunications like these are not uncommon when players who have spent most of their careers as opponents have to bat together. Gaikwad and Priyansh were only recently playing against each other for Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings, respectively, in the IPL.
Priyansh lost his wicket at 32 (32) after starting quite well in the List-A game. At the time of writing this, Ruturaj was standing solid at 80 (88).
