IndiGo has introduced nonstop flights between Chennai and Réunion Island, effective April 29, becoming the only Indian airline to offer direct connectivity to the destination.
The service will operate three
times a week using Airbus A320 aircraft, marking a significant expansion of the airline’s international network, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Flight Schedule And Timings
According to the airline’s schedule, flights to Réunion will operate under callsign 6E 1871 on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The aircraft will depart Chennai at 12:20 pm and arrive at Réunion Island at 5:10 pm.
The return leg, flight 6E 1872, will run on the same days, departing at 6:10 pm and landing in Chennai at 2:10 am the following day. All timings are based on local time zones, as stated in the airline’s official release.
Why This Route Matters
The new route addresses a strong travel demand driven by a large Indian-origin population on the island. With nearly 3,00,000 residents of Indian descent, accounting for over one-third of the population, there is consistent movement between the two regions.
India also serves as a key hub for business, medical, wellness, and religious travel, while offering onward connectivity to destinations across East Asia.
The direct service is expected to simplify travel for both diaspora communities and international passengers.
A Unique Island Destination
Réunion Island is widely recognised for its dramatic natural landscapes, including volcanic mountains, dense rainforests, waterfalls, and scenic beaches, all located within relatively short distances.
Significant portions of the island, such as its pitons, cirques, and ramparts, are designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The island’s culture is a vibrant mix of African, European, Indian, and Asian influences.
Beyond leisure tourism, Réunion is also emerging as a destination for business travellers, supported by expanding MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) infrastructure and a growing focus on sustainable tourism practices.
IndiGo Highlights Strategic Expansion
Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, described the launch as a key milestone in the airline’s international growth. He noted that the destination offers a wide range of experiences, from hiking and canyoning in protected national parks to paragliding, whale watching, and snorkelling in coral reef lagoons.
He also emphasised that IndiGo is currently the only Indian carrier offering direct flights to Réunion Island, enhancing convenience for travellers visiting for tourism, trade, or to connect with family and friends.
Booking And Travel Options
Passengers can book tickets through IndiGo’s mobile application, official website, or through authorised travel agents. The airline also allows travellers to pre-book meals and beverages, including alcoholic options.
Additional services such as UpFront and Flexi can be selected for added comfort and flexibility, offering benefits like preferred seating, complimentary snacks, and easier cancellation policies. Travellers are advised to check visa requirements before planning their journey to ensure a smooth travel experience.
