With the Raksha Bandhan festival being celebrated today on August 9, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued a traffic advisory urging people to plan their journeys in advance, take alternate routes, and make
use of public transport. Highlighting the Delhi Metro and other public transport options as convenient and time-saving, the advisory aims to help commuters avoid congestion.
The Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory on Friday, stating that with Raksha Bandhan falling on a weekend, a large number of people are expected to travel out of Delhi via the National Highways, which may lead to traffic jams. Commuters heading towards Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, and Chandigarh via NH-44 and the Singhu Border have been advised to use alternate routes.
The advisory also encouraged the use of the Delhi Metro and other public transport services as faster and more efficient ways to reach destinations.

Meanwhile, traffic congestion has already begun in several areas. In the early hours of Saturday, a kilometre-long jam on the Delhi–Meerut Expressway caused significant inconvenience to motorists. On Friday, vehicles were stuck for hours at the Ghazipur border, while traffic crawled on roads leading from Noida–Akshardham Road to Gandhi Nagar, Geeta Colony, and Shastri Park.
In Noida, traffic also moved at a snail’s pace on the eve of Raksha Bandhan, as people returned home and engaged in last-minute festival shopping.
