France’s Culture Minister Rachida Dati reported a break-in at the Louvre in Paris on Sunday, prompting the world-famous museum to close for the day.
“A hold-up took place this morning at the opening of
the Louvre Museum,” Dati wrote on X, using a French word that can also mean “robbery.” She added, “No injuries reported. I’m on site with museum staff and police.”
According to sources speaking to news agency AFP, robbers broke into the museum on Sunday morning and fled with jewellery, the value of which is still being assessed. Police said an unknown number of thieves arrived on a scooter, armed with small chainsaws and used a goods lift to reach the room they were targeting.
