The Dhurandhar franchise, directed by Aditya Dhar and headlined by Ranveer Singh, has become one of the highest-grossing franchises in Hindi cinema. The films’ numbers, from box office figures to fees,
have always remained an interesting talking point for fans. Now, it has been revealed that neither Ranveer nor Aditya charged massive upfront fees for the films.
Jyoti Deshpande, who co-produced the franchise under Jio Studios, told ET that Ranveer and Aditya opted for a risk-sharing model in which they charged a smaller upfront fee and then took a share in the films’ profits. Aditya Dhar also co-produced the film with Lokesh Dhar under their banner, B62 Studios.
“In Dhurandhar, Ranveer came with a smaller fixed fee and a backend deal, and therefore benefited from that arrangement. The same was true for Aditya, who also came in with a smaller fixed fee and a backend. He ended up making a significant upside along with us. That’s how you distribute both the risk and the reward,” Jyoti said.
She also mentioned, “On Dhurandhar, we went all in. The film ended up being made for almost double the amount we had initially set out to spend. Of course, we eventually ended up with a two-part film, so it became a journey. In the end, all of us went laughing to the bank.”
Dhurandhar 2 OTT Release In India
Meanwhile, the franchise’s OTT release has also been making headlines. The makers have opted for a rare dual OTT release strategy, with two different versions of the film set to stream on separate platforms for international and Indian audiences. The “raw and undekha” version of Dhurandhar began streaming globally on Netflix from May 22. However, this version is not available for viewers in India.
For Indian audiences, the film’s domestic streaming rights have gone to JioHotstar. The Indian version of Dhurandhar 2 will premiere on Jio Hotstar on June 4. In India, JioHotstar has bought the exclusive streaming rights for the film in a deal reportedly worth nearly Rs 150 crore. It is being seen as one of the biggest OTT deals for an Indian film in recent years. Indian viewers are also expected to get the extended version of the movie when it releases on the platform.
