He also urged officials to register a case not just against the actor, but also against “other the persons who instigated and encouraged such a derogatory remark affecting the sentiments of other religious and take stringent action against them.”
What Prakash Raj said
The controversy traces back to January, when Prakash Raj attended the Kerala Literature Festival. During a session with journalist Shahina KK, the actor shared a version of the Ramayana that had been performed by a children’s theatre group as part of a workshop.
Narrating the story, he said, “While they were eating, Shurpanakha (Ravana’s sister) and Ravan suddenly appeared. An angry Shurpanakha said, ‘Brother, they are eating fruits.’ On this, Ravan said, ‘They are hungry. Let them eat. We will talk later.'”
He then added a modern twist to the narrative, saying, “Ram said that we have eaten fruits from Ravana’s field, so we will pay. On this, Shurpanakha said, ‘$2,000 with GST.’ Ram and Lakshman said that they did not have money, even after Ravana gave them a discount. Then Ravana said, ‘You had come here in search of fruits, and now that you have eaten the fruits, plant their seeds, grow trees, and go back.'”
The remarks were part of a broader discussion, but clips from the session later circulated widely online.
Legal action and fresh complaint
Following the circulation of the video, another complaint was filed earlier this month.
Advocate Amita Sachdeva submitted her complaint on April 16, alleging that the actor’s statements were “deliberately malicious acts” intended to outrage religious feelings.
Describing her stance, she said she is a “devout Hindu and concerned citizen whose religious sentiments have been deeply hurt.”
She further added, “Insults to our Bhagwans and Sanatan Dharma will no longer be tolerated. These people must understand — there are limits.”
Authorities are yet to confirm what action will be taken next.
