PNB Greater Noida Branch: What Happened?
The allegations came to light after nearly two dozen customers reported that funds had gone missing from their savings accounts and fixed deposits.
Following a complaint lodged by customer Shrichand and other account holders, an FIR was registered against unidentified bank employees under Section 316(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to criminal breach of trust.
The complaint puts the alleged losses suffered by 21 individuals at more than Rs 11.24 crore. Among them, two customers have reported losses exceeding Rs 1 crore each.
However, local account holders estimate that the alleged fraud could involve around Rs 35 crore, with savings accounts, fixed deposits and mutual fund investments reportedly affected.
Shrichand, who lives in Surajpur in Greater Noida, claimed that Rs 1.16 crore had been misappropriated from his fixed deposit.
Bijendra Singh, another customer, said his savings account, which previously held around Rs 87-88 lakh, now reflected a balance of just Rs 1 lakh. Singh, a farmer, said the funds included compensation received from an authority.
Meanwhile, Haneep Khan alleged that nearly Rs 39 lakh had disappeared from his account. Zakir, another account holder, claimed that Rs 9.5 lakh was missing, despite him receiving no transaction alert or text message.
Gautam Buddh Nagar Lead District Manager Ram Vinod Kumar told Press Trust of India (PTI) that the authorities were taking action and examining the grievances raised by account holders.
Police said the bank management had assured customers that their complaints would be addressed. Several employees, including the branch manager, have been suspended, while further legal proceedings are underway.
