The Indian Premier League has redefined cricket in a hitherto unexplored manner as the money-rich T20 franchise league has served as the cutting-edge sporting property that has taken the game to the masses.
The incredible strength and abundance of talent in the peninsular nation has been brought to the forefront thanks to the uber-successful concept that has become a summer staple in the nation populated by billions.
The event has also breathed life into dreams of kids from far and wide and has served as a proving ground for talent, local and international, to capture the imagination of the populace.
In addition to strengthening the Indian talent pool, it has also served as a lifeline for cricketers from across the sprawling nation to make a living off the sport they love.
The IPL began in the year 2008, piggybacking on the success of the Indian men’s cricket team led by the legendary MS Dhoni, which clinched the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup the year prior to the league’s inception. The brain child of former chairman Lalit Modi, the IPL took shape under the aegis of the BCCI, who have served as one of the most supportive pillar for the sporting spectacle the league has gone on to become.
The idea to pair up two of the nation’s biggest fascinations, ticket and glitz, big names including Shah Rukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta all came on board in a brave attempt, that has yielded dividends for everyone who believed in the dream.
The IPL took flight thanks to the awe-inspiring curtain-raiser that witnessed carnage from Kiwi maverick Brendon McCullum, who smashed 158 runs knock in KKR’s 140-run opening day win over RCB to kick things off. The IPL was well and truly off to a flier as KKR posted 222 runs in just 20 overs before bundling out RCB for 89 runs.
The IPL offered up multiple underdog stories, including that of RR’s inaugural season triumph as Shane Warne defied the odds to lead the Royals to the maiden championships title.
And by the time the second season rolled around, the tournament was the toast of the town. The profile of the event ballooned with each passing year as the nation sat glued to the telly every time summer came around.
The event that began with eight teams, managed to expand into double digits thanks to the incredible interest the event was able to create with millionaires clamouring at the chance of being able to get an in on the action.
The first three seasons was contested between 8 sides, before 2 more joined in during the fourth year of the showpiece.
Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Bengaluru and Deccan were the first ones to buy into the format, before Pune and Kochi joined in. However, the two latest entrants did not stay in the fray for too long as Kochi Tuskers Kerala were dissolved due to breaches of BCCI agreements following their debut season, while Pune Warriors lasted for a couple of seasons after KTK before also being dissolved in 2013 as IPL reverted to 8 teams.
The year also saw the termination of the Deccan Chargers, who clinched the title in the second season of the tournament, due to financial discrepancies as Sun Group came onboard the gravy train and rebranded the Hyderabad-based side as the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
While the stocks kept raising, the dark underbelly of the betting world reared its head into the sport, which resulted in the expulsion of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for a couple of years due to the spot-fixing and betting scandals that rocked the showpiece.
CSK and RR served their time for the involvements of Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of then Chennai supremo N Srinivasan, and Raj Kundra, Shipla Shetty’s husband, in spot-fixing. The two sides were replaced by Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions.
Chennai came roaring back in their return campaign as they clinched the silverware yet again to add to their collection of trophies.
The gears kept turning and the show went on, growing in stature and TRP with each passing campaign, before 2022 witnessed yet another significant moment in the history of the league as Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants entered the fray, with the former going on to win the tournament under the leadership of former MI prodigy Hardik Pandya.
Pandya nearly joined an elite list of skippers including the iconic MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to defend the IPL crown, before being beaten to the punch by MSD’s very own Chennai Super Kings at Ahmedabad in the following season.
CSK joined MI as the most successful side in the history of the tournament with five titles each, before Kolkata Knight Riders added their third crown in the 2024 season.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru, spearheaded by the iconic Virat Kohli ended their 17-year trophy drought in the 2025 season to join RR, SRH, CSK, MI and KKR in the honours list of IPL winners to send the Karnataka Capital City into pandemonium.
