Over 40 trains are either stalled, diverted, short-terminated or cancelled by the Eastern Railways as Kurmi Samaj is organising a rail blockade. Despite prohibitory orders, an indefinite rail and road
blockade is underway in parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha.
The Eastern Railways on Saturday announced cancellation of three trains due to agitation by Adivasi Kurmi Samaj, Jharkhand in various locations over East Central Railway & South Eastern Railway.

The communique also mentioned that the train “12020 Ranchi- Howrah Shatabdi Express (journey commencing on 20.09.2025)” will be short originated from Asansol.
Earlier in the day, the Indian Railways announced disruption of over 46 trains. An official statement by South Eastern Railway (SER) reads, “Train services of South Eastern Railway have been partially affected due to agitation by Adiwasi Kudmi Samaj today (20.09.2025). Agitation was staged at Bhanjpur station of Kharagpur Division from 05:02 hrs to 05:35 hrs. Agitation is also continuing between Sini-Gamharia section of Chakradharpur division, Rakhamines-Galudih Section of Kharagpur Division.”
Kurmi Samaj Protest
Kurmi community protestors have been demanding for a Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the community and inclusion of the Kurmali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
The protestors were seen sitting on tracks at Rai station in Ranchi, Parasnath in Giridih and Chandrpura in Bokaro district under the banner of Adivasi Kurmi Samaj (AKS), causing disruption in train services in various divisions of the South Eastern and East Central railways.

In Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, members of the Kurmi community blocked railway tracks. Hundreds of men, women and children under the banner of the Odisha Kurmi Sena blocked the railway tracks at Bhanjapur railway station.
According to an official, they held the Bangirposi-Bhubaneswar Super Fast Express for over 20 minutes before being removed from the tracks.
