Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday shared a photograph of INDIA bloc leaders with President Droupadi Murmu after their meeting, during which the delegation
submitted a memorandum raising concerns over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the voting process.
In a post on social media, Rahul Gandhi said the delegation had sought the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and offered to submit evidence in support of its concerns. He said the President had asked the leaders to provide proof and that the INDIA bloc was willing to submit the material.
Rahul Gandhi also said the President had assured the delegation that she would examine the matter and take action. The memorandum’s contents are expected to be shared separately by the Opposition.
The meeting comes amid the Opposition’s continuing allegations of irregularities in electoral rolls and its objections to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
New Delhi witnessed a series of political and security developments late on Friday as Opposition leaders met President Droupadi Murmu and authorities stepped up preparations for Saturday’s protest at Jantar Mantar.
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah and other INDIA bloc leaders met the President and submitted a memorandum raising concerns over alleged electoral irregularities.
As the meeting unfolded, Delhi Police put preventive security arrangements in place ahead of the protest called by student groups and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which are demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Traffic diversions are scheduled to begin at 6 am on Saturday at 30 locations across the capital, while restrictions affecting Metro services and train operations have also been announced. Delhi Airport issued a separate advisory for passengers amid the expected disruptions.
With security arrangements being put in place and travel advisories issued ahead of the demonstration, commuters and passengers have been urged to plan their journeys accordingly.
