Radiant, clear skin is a common goal – but for many, acne and pigmentation stand in the way. The Dermafique Indian Skin Health Report notes that 68% of Indian women list acne as a top concern, with 94%
of those aged 20–25 battling breakouts. The reason lies in our biology: larger pores, higher sebum production, and greater melanin content make Indian skin more susceptible to acne and post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Understanding the Acne-Pigmentation Cycle
When acne heals, it often leaves behind dark spots instead of scars. This happens because melanin-rich Indian skin overreacts to inflammation, producing excess pigment. Dr Aparna Santhanam explains, “Breaking this cycle requires a two-pronged approach, reducing breakouts and controlling pigment overproduction simultaneously.”
Ingredients That Work for Indian Skin
Gentle exfoliants like glycolic acid help keep pores clear and regulate oil. Niacinamide plays a dual role – it minimises inflammation and inhibits melanin transfer, helping fade post-acne marks. Zinc PCA helps regulate sebum, while azelaic acid targets both acne-causing bacteria and hyperpigmentation.
Given Indian skin’s higher sensitivity and barrier weakness as highlighted in the Dermafique report, Dr Santhanam cautions against over-exfoliation. Instead, she recommends skin cycling: “Alternating exfoliation with repair days using ceramides and panthenol to maintain balance.”
The Post Holiday Routine
Post-holiday skincare should focus on consistency, not intensity. Cleanse twice daily with a mild foaming agent, use a niacinamide-based serum, and apply a light moisturiser enriched with hyaluronic acid to maintain hydration without clogging pores.
To tackle pigmentation, vitamin C and liquorice extract help brighten skin while protecting against oxidative damage. Pairing them with niacinamide enhances tone evenness over time.
As Dr Santhanam concludes, “Indian skin demands balance – between cleansing and nourishment, brightening and protection. The Dermafique Indian Skin Health Report reiterates that our skin’s unique melanin profile and pore structure make customised, ingredient-driven care essential. With the right actives and patience, even stubborn acne and pigmentation can be managed effectively – just in time for the glow.”
