Summer brings longer days, outdoor activities, and increased exposure to sunlight. However, it also raises the risk of developing freckles and tan lines, especially in countries like India, where UV radiation
levels are high. While freckles are small pigmented spots that appear due to sun exposure, tan lines occur when certain areas of the skin receive more sunlight than others. Both are largely driven by ultraviolet (UV) rays, triggering increased melanin production in the skin.
We speak to Dr Akanksha Agarwal, Founder-Director & Head of Aesthetic Services at Centre for Aesthetics (CFA, Gurgaon), to understand what precautions should one take to avoid forming tan lines and freckles during the summer.
The most effective way to prevent freckles and tan lines is consistent sun protection. Skin care experts recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day. Sunscreen protects the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, which are responsible for tanning, pigmentation, and premature ageing. It is important to apply sunscreen at least 15–20 minutes before stepping outdoors and reapply every two to three hours, particularly if sweating or spending extended time in the sun.
Choosing the right type of sunscreen also matters. Gel-based or lightweight sunscreens work well for humid climates because they absorb quickly without leaving a heavy residue. For individuals prone to pigmentation or freckles, sunscreens with ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide can provide effective physical protection from UV rays.
Protective clothing can also help to reduce sun exposure that leads to tan lines or tanning . Wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and lightweight scarves can shield the face and neck from direct sunlight. When possible, opting for clothing that covers the shoulders or upper arms can reduce the chances of visible tan lines developing around straps or sleeves.
Timing outdoor activities wisely can also make a difference. UV radiation tends to be strongest between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Limiting sun exposure during these hours can significantly reduce the likelihood of tanning and pigmentation.
Skincare ingredients that support pigmentation control may also help prevent freckles from becoming more prominent. Products containing vitamin C, niacinamide, and antioxidants can help protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by sun exposure. These ingredients work by neutralising free radicals and supporting an even skin tone.
Hydration and gentle exfoliation can further support healthy skin during summer. Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells that can make tanning appear more noticeable. However, exfoliation should be done carefully to avoid irritating the skin, especially when spending time in the sun.
Freckles and tan lines are often temporary, but preventing them is easier than treating pigmentation later. By combining sunscreen use, protective clothing, antioxidant skincare, and smart sun habits, individuals can enjoy the summer while maintaining an even and healthy complexion.
