Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor reunited on the couch of Karan Johar’s Koffee With Karan Season 9, bringing their usual camaraderie to the latest episode. The actors, who have previously shared screen space
in Bawaal and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, opened up about their professional journeys, personal lives and industry contemporaries, making for an engaging conversation. During the episode, Varun even picked Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar over Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal.
Varun Dhawan chooses Ranveer Singh over Ranbir Kapoor
Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar franchise, directed by Aditya Dhar, emerged as a massive box-office success, with both instalments collectively earning over ₹3,000 crore worldwide. The first film crossed ₹1,300 crore globally, while its sequel, Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, further boosted the franchise’s earnings with a worldwide gross of over ₹1,800 crore. The two films established the franchise as one of the biggest commercial successes in Indian cinema. On the other hand, Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, too emerged as a hit despite facing massive backlash online.
During the latest episode of Koffee With Karan 9, Karan Johar asked Varun Dhawan to pick his favourite between the two performances, and the actor was quick to make his choice. He said, “I would definitely say Ranveer in Dhurandhar.”
Varun also admitted that his earlier flex about his box-office record in comparison to Ranbir and Ranveer may have jinxed his success. The actor said the experience taught him that instead of bragging about box-office numbers, he should let the quality of his work speak for itself. He said, “The only flex that one should do is with your work. I feel many years back I came here and flexed about how many hits I had and somewhere it jinxed me.”
The remark dates back to Koffee With Karan Season 6, which aired in November 2018. When KJo asked Varun if he would trade careers with Ranbir Kapoor or Ranveer Singh, the actor defended his own box-office record, saying, “They haven’t had what I had. I’ve had eight hits in a row.”
Launched by Karan Johar in Student of the Year alongside Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt, Varun enjoyed a successful run with films such as Main Tera Hero, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Judwaa 2. However, his box-office streak took a hit in the years following his 2018 remark, with films like Kalank, Street Dancer 3D, Coolie No. 1 and JugJugg Jeeyo delivering mixed results.
