Popular folk and devotional singer Maithili Thakur joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Patna ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections scheduled for November. The 25-year-old singer formally joined the party
in the presence of senior BJP leaders at the state headquarters. A native of Benipatti in Madhubani, Maithili Thakur had earlier expressed her desire to enter politics and contest from her home constituency.
“I have always been connected to the people of Bihar through music and culture. Now I wish to serve them through public life,” she said after joining the BJP.

Who Is Maithili Thakur?
After being rejected by several reality shows, including Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs and Indian Idol Junior, Maithili Thakur rose to fame as the first runner-up on Rising Star in 2017.

Recognised for her contribution to Bihar’s folk and devotional music, she was appointed State Icon of Bihar by the Election Commission. In 2021, she received the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from the Sangeet Natak Akademi for her work in preserving traditional Maithili and Bhojpuri music.
Trained in Hindustani classical and folk traditions by her father and grandfather, Maithili Thakur performs in Maithili, Bhojpuri and Hindi. She enjoys a large social media following for her renditions of traditional songs.
Polling for Bihar’s 243-member Assembly will be held in two phases- on November 6 and November 11- with counting of votes scheduled for November 14. Earlier in the day, the BJP unveiled its first list of 71 candidates for the upcoming Bihar polls. According to the list, Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha will contest from Tarapur and Lakhisarai respectively while State Minister Nitin Nabin has been fielded from Bankipur and Renu Devi from Bettiah. Minister Mangal Pandey will contest from Sivan.
