Two hotels in Delhi’s Aerocity that have reportedly been booked to accommodate foreign guests attending the upcoming BRICS Summit have come under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s (FSSAI)
scanner after inspections flagged a series of food safety, hygiene and storage-related deficiencies.
The inspections at Andaz Delhi by Hyatt and JW Marriott New Delhi revealed expired food products, pest activity, problems with refrigeration and storage, inadequate segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, and deficiencies in food-handling practices.
The findings come ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit, which India is scheduled to host in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.
87 Kg Of Expired Sweets Found At Andaz Delhi
The FSSAI team inspected Andaz Delhi on June 22, 2026. Among the deficiencies recorded was a lack of proper segregation between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food in the kitchen.
The inspection found that veg and non-veg cutting boards were being kept in the same water container.
Two bread packets were also found bearing expired stickers. The confectionery area contained around 87 kg of expired sweets, which were destroyed on the spot.
The pastry section had an expired cake base, besides flies and cockroaches. Pest activity and foul smell were also reported in kitchen areas.
The inspection further pointed to shortcomings in the procurement of food items and in checking the FSSAI licences of suppliers.
Samples of several food products, including ghee, mayonnaise, lentils and sauces, were also taken during the inspection.
JW Marriott Inspection Records 59 Deficiencies
The FSSAI inspection at JW Marriott New Delhi was conducted on August 24 and 25, with the team recording 59 deficiencies during the two-day exercise.
The inspection found that the required FSSAI licence or endorsement was not available for some food products.
Errors in the labelling of packaged products were also detected. At K3 – the restaurant at the hotel, a visible particle was found in water being served to customers.
Pest-related concerns were recorded in multiple areas. Cockroaches were found in the Indian and bakery kitchens, while fruit flies were detected in the vegetable section. Food residue was found on washed utensils, and hair was found in a pot.
Several dustbins were overflowing, while some did not have lids or pedals.
The inspection also found malfunctioning equipment, broken tiles and water leakage in refrigerators and freezers. Rotten apples and tomatoes were found in storage.
Storage, Food Handling And Employee Hygiene Under Scanner
The inspection also found food items being kept in the open and deficiencies in the segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian storage.
In one instance, a container holding prawns was labelled “juice”, while juice was labelled “prawn”.
Cockroaches and broken containers were also found in the bakery. Idli-dosa batter and praline paste were not being stored at the prescribed temperature.
Some employees were found handling food without proper hairnets or gloves. One worker was engaged in cooking despite having an open wound.
The inspection further flagged open electrical wires and faulty plug-switches in several areas. Corrosion was found in the storage tank in the water-bottling area.
Samples of water, paneer, khoya, rasmalai, red velvet sponge and other food products were also collected from JW Marriott.
Why The Findings Matter Ahead Of BRICS Summit
The two hotels are located in Aerocity and, according to Delhi Police sources, are among the hotels being used to accommodate foreign guests arriving for the BRICS Summit. The findings have therefore assumed significance as preparations intensify for the high-profile international gathering.
FSSAI has directed the hotels to undertake corrective action on the deficiencies identified during the inspections.
A report on the inspections said the findings included expired food, pest activity, storage problems and other hygiene-related concerns at the two establishments.
India will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. The official BRICS 2026 website identifies India’s chairship theme as ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’.
The summit is expected to bring leaders and senior delegations from BRICS member countries to the capital.
