Petrol and Diesel Price Hike: Even after the latest fuel price hike across the country, some Indian cities continue to offer comparatively cheaper petrol and diesel rates than major metro markets such
as Hyderabad, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram.
Fuel prices were increased by up to Rs 3.60 per litre on May 15 amid rising global crude oil prices and supply concerns linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis. However, lower state taxes helped several cities maintain relatively affordable fuel rates despite the nationwide revision.
This is the first hike in petrol and diesel prices after May 2022.
Chandigarh Remains Cheapest For Fuel
Chandigarh emerged as the cheapest city among major markets for both petrol and diesel after the latest price hike.
Petrol in Chandigarh was priced at Rs 97.27 per litre after a Rs 2.97 increase, while diesel stood at Rs 85.25 per litre following a Rs 2.80 hike. Diesel rates in Chandigarh were significantly lower compared to several other state capitals where prices crossed Rs 95 per litre.
New Delhi ranked among the cheaper fuel markets despite the latest revision. Petrol in the national capital rose Rs 3 to Rs 97.77 per litre, while diesel increased to Rs 90.67 per litre.
Lucknow also remained relatively affordable for consumers. Petrol there was retailing at Rs 97.58 per litre after a Rs 2.85 hike, while diesel prices rose Rs 3.01 to Rs 90.87 per litre.
Noida, Gurgaon Among Lower-Priced Markets
In Noida, petrol prices climbed Rs 3.30 to Rs 98.04 per litre and diesel rose Rs 3.50 to Rs 91.31 per litre. Gurgaon too remained below the Rs 100-per-litre mark for petrol, with rates at Rs 98.29 per litre after a Rs 2.99 increase. Diesel there cost Rs 90.77 per litre.
Among western Indian cities, Ahmedabad continued to have relatively lower fuel prices compared to other large urban centres. Before the latest revision, petrol there was retailing below Rs 95 per litre.
In sharp contrast, Hyderabad recorded the highest petrol price among major cities at Rs 110.89 per litre, while Thiruvananthapuram had the highest diesel rate at Rs 99.63 per litre.
Fuel prices differ across states due to variations in VAT, local taxes and transportation costs. Analysts said cities with lower state levies continue to offer some relief to consumers even as global crude oil prices remain elevated.

Currently, crude oil trades at an elevated level of $107 per barrel.
