Kareena Kapoor shuts down RK Studios revival talk
Amid growing reports that Ranbir Kapoor was planning to bring back RK Studios, Kareena Kapoor Khan has now clarified that there is no such development. Speaking to ETimes, Kareena revealed that the rumours had even reached the family WhatsApp group, where they were dismissed outright. The actor admitted that while the idea sounds exciting, it is not something currently being planned.
‘It’s heartbreaking, but it’s not happening’
Kareena did not hide her emotional connect to the legacy of RK Studios, which was founded by her grandfather Raj Kapoor in 1948. She said, “That’s just not true. It was even being discussed in our family group, and everyone was like, ‘This isn’t happening.’ I feel people really want it to happen. I feel like Ranbir is focused on acting. He loves acting. I think he’s the best actor in India we have today. So, his focus is on that. It’s heartbreaking, but it’s not happening. Maybe Lolo and Ranbir should think about it because I don’t think I can think like a director or a producer.”
What sparked the rumours
The clarification comes after reports claimed that Ranbir Kapoor was planning to revive RK Films and even make his directorial debut under the banner. There were also claims that he had secured a 20-year lease for a new space in Mumbai as part of the revival plan.
These reports gained traction given the emotional and historical value attached to RK Studios, which was once a cornerstone of Hindi cinema.
RK Studios legacy and closure
The original RK Studios property in Chembur was sold to Godrej Properties for Rs 180 crore in May 2019, marking the end of an era.
The last film produced under the RK Films banner was Aa Ab Laut Chalen in 1999.
Since then, there has been periodic speculation about the Kapoor family reviving the banner, but no concrete plans have materialised so far.
