YouTube is bringing new AI features for its users but now the technology is going to be used to verify yours and many other’s age on the platform. YouTube has started the tests with people in the US where
it wants AI to help them determine if a person should be categorised into an adult or a teen account.
These behaviours will be analysed by the AI system based on the videos you watch, the kind of categories that you visit frequently and also check for account creation details.
Putting this kind of trust on AI has not proven to be very effective till date but it seems YouTube is confident about its training methods and now willing to publicly check for users in the background.
YouTube Using AI To Verify Your Age
YouTube’s new AI measure feels like a move to protect the teens and youth. It has recently made some privacy-based changes for the young audience, and having AI determine their right age could help them avoid future issues. Once the system says the account is being used by a teen, it will disable ads personalised, enable digital wellbeing tools and other measures to protect the youth users on the platform.
Using AI seems to be the trend these days, but as we have seen, the tech can be prone to mistakes. Now, imagine if this feature ends up estimating someone’s age incorrectly, and blocks their access to the main account, how does one go about sharing the grievance and will YouTube even have the system to fix the mistake, these are the things the platform should work on making right before taking it for more regions.
YouTube’s AI-powered search feature is coming to more people who have signed for the Premium version. But you still need to be in one of the main YouTube markets to try out the tool. The platform tends to keep some of its experimental features limited to a select base and eventually bring it for a wider rollout or completely ditch the tool.
But in this case, we are seeing YouTube get new AI tools, and the Search option is moving to more people which can be only good in the larger scheme of things.
