A glimpse into Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s Kolkata mansion
In February 2023, Architectural Digest India offered a rare look inside Sabyasachi’s magnificent Kolkata home through an Instagram feature. Spanning an impressive 7,250 square feet, the residence is nothing short of spectacular. Every corner is thoughtfully curated, filled with art, antiques, rich textiles, statement furniture, and an unapologetic explosion of colour.
Sabyasachi’s home celebrates maximalism in its truest sense. In contrast to today’s popular minimal interiors defined by neutral palettes and uniform marble, his walls are adorned with vivid wallpapers that evoke the feeling of stepping into tropical landscapes or dense forests. The boldness is carefully balanced by muted wooden and marble flooring, which grounds the space and allows the decor to shine without overwhelming the senses.
Surrounding the mansion is a lush garden with nearly 4,000 plants, creating a serene green sanctuary. Inside, the home features grand elements often associated with luxury residences, including sparkling crystal chandeliers, an elegant conservatory-style breakfast room, a lavish dining area, and an extensive display of art collected over the years. Plush seating, carefully chosen antiques, and even a dramatic bathroom complete the home’s opulent character.

According to Architectural Digest India, Sabyasachi reimagined the guest bedrooms into functional yet indulgent spaces, including expansive walk-in wardrobes, a dedicated shoe room, and a striking bathroom crowned with a chandelier so large it rivals the bathtub beneath it.
Speaking about his design philosophy, Sabyasachi shared that while he considers himself a minimalist internally, his external expression leans toward maximalism. He explained that creating a beautiful layered home requires a thoughtful mix of art, antiques, textiles, furniture, and unusual collectibles, all brought together with intention and harmony.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who hails from Kolkata, is one of India’s most influential fashion designers. A graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata, where he excelled academically, he chose to forge his own path by declining offers from established designers and instead launching his own luxury label — a decision that would go on to redefine Indian couture.
